Education Division of Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in New York (TECO) has launched its first Spring Concert in 2015 which is also the 30th event of its department on February 27. The event invited five young Taiwanese musicians Joy Wang, Sylvia Chen, Tracy Chang, Yi-Wen Lai and Chang-En Lu giving their fantastic performance to the audiences. During the show, Joy Wang performed the《Farewell Etude 》to commemorate Taiwanese composer Tyzen Hsiao, who( known as the “Taiwanese Rachmaninoff”) just passed away on February 24. The audiences were touched and atmosphere was warm and moving.
The spring concert is "Four Seasons TECO Music Salon" series of five, and it is the first one in 2015. Education Division of TECO actively encourages all young Taiwanese to show their strength and talent, and particularly to establish a strong relationship in New York City among the music community and all the young musicians. The concert provided a wonderful program list to the audiences, which including Schumann: Fantasiestücke Op. 73 (舒曼: 幻想小品),Amy Beach: Chanson d'Amour (艾米 碧曲：愛之歌), Gordon Chin: Phantasy (金希文: 幻想曲), Ya-Chu Yang: A Tiny Crab and a Butterfly (楊雅筑 : 云蝶。云蟹), TyZen Hsiao ( known as the “Taiwanese Rachmaninoff): Farewell Etude Op.55 (蕭泰然: 告別練習曲), and Astor Piazolla : Four seasons (皮亞佐拉:布宜諾斯艾利斯的四季)。
The Spring Concert featured five Taiwanese classical musicians and singers from the most prestigious music programs in the world. First, Taiwanese cellist Yi-Chun Chen (Sylvia Chen) has performed both as a soloist and chamber musician in Asia and in the United States. She is currently pursuing a master’s degree and is adjunct cello faculty at Steinhardt of New York University, studying with Marion Feldman and Kikuei Ikeda of theTokyo String Quartet. Second, Taiwan native soprano Hsin-Mei Chang( Tracy Chang) had won many competitions in Taiwan before she embarks her musical journey to the United States. In 2011, Ms. Chang won the first place in Friends of Eastman Opera Vocal Competition, judged by the Metropolitan Opera manager- Lenore Rosenberg. She looks forward to participating in the master class series at The Metropolitan Opera Guild in March, 2015. Ms. Chang receives full scholarship to pursue a Doctorate of Musical Arts at the City University of New York. Third, Indigenous Taiwanese pianist Chi Wang, (Joy Wang) expecting herself as a versatile artist, has presented abundant music related performances in various forms as a soloist, chamber musician, and singer. After finishing her bachelor degree, Miss. Wang received admissions for master degree from Manhattan School of Music, Mannes School, New York University and Carnegie Mellon University with scholarship. Under the studio of well-known music educationist Nina Svetlanova in Manhattan School of Music, Ms. Wang has been highly commented by Prof. Svetlanova as being “A very talented, artistic, characteristic, mature pianist with great musicality and a certain presence of stage.” Fourth, Chang-En Lu after beginning his violin studies at the tender age of five, he eventually graduated from Taipei National University of the Arts where he studied with Wei-Ming Hwang and Min-Yen Chien. Furthermore, from 2008 to 2012, he have received the honored Presidential Award every semester at Taipei National University of the Arts. Currently, he pursues his master degree at Manhattan School of Music with Nicholas Mann. Moreover, a native of Taiwan, pianist Yi-Wen Lai began her piano study at the age of seven. Ms. Lai completed her Master’s degree and Bachelor’s degree in Piano Performance at National Taiwan Normal University, and holds a Master’s degree in Piano Accompanying and Chamber Music at Eastman School of Music where she studied with Jean Barr. She is now pursuing her Doctorate in Collaborative Piano at New England Conservatory, studying with Jonathan Feldman and Cameron Stowe.
Taiwanese composer Tyzen Hsiao who( known as the “Taiwanese Rachmaninoff”) just passed away on February 24. These young musicians expressed their sadness and their love of this great composer. They said “listening Tyzen Hsiao’s music is an enjoyment and a bless. His music makes them proud to be a Taiwanese” Sylvia Chen also said: "We are full of gratitude for the concert, thank TECO’s support ,let our music to be heard. We will continue to make effort to improve in the future.”
Besides this Spring concert, Education Division of TECO will actively commit to expand the stage to show the strength of the students from Taiwan.
