Over 200 Taiwanese students from Connecticut, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania crowded at the lobby of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in New York on Friday, September 9, 2016. The Education Division of TECO-NY and the Federation of Taiwanese Student Associations in New York (FTSANY) jointly organized the event to welcome students for a brand new school year and to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival together.
Education Director Charlin Chang encouraged students to take care of one another, be aware of public safety, especially when they student aboard in other country, also reminding them that regardless any difficulty in life, we need to conquer . Director Chang also urges the student be aware of “microaggressions,” part of a new campus vocabulary which means snubs or insults deliver negative messages might not be intended but targeted at people based on some discrimination while study in multicultural campus. More importantly, Director Chang encouraged students should start to establish a good connection for their future.
The event also brought students together as one family to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival, which would not be complete without moon cakes and grapefruit. As students enjoyed homely bubble tea and snacked on traditional moon cakes, FTSANY leaders introduced the organization and gave tips for navigating New York City. Students were encouraged to get connected, not only with FTSANY, but with their school’s Taiwanese student organization Though the event officially started at 1:30pm, many arrived early, eager to meet peers and make new friends. At the party’s end at 5:00pm , all were slow to leave and lingered at the entrances, caught up in conversations with new friends and feeling very much at home.
