New York (FTSANY) held a cultural exchange event in Central Park’s Sheep Meadow.
FTSANY, established in 1990, serves Taiwanese student organizations in New York State, New
Jersey, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania. Joining with TECO-NY, it regularly holds educational,
entertainment, and interactive events, inviting students and young professionals to exchange
ideas and interests.
At the Sheep Meadow event on Saturday, June 12, FTSANY invited Taiwanese students, their
friends, and guests from all over the region to enjoy a special occasion featuring the best of
Taiwanese food, culture, and a visual presentation about the important Dragon Boat Festival
tradition. The purpose is to raise awareness about Taiwan, its culture, its people, and its society.
The Dragon Boat Festival, which this year fell on June 14, is an important holiday
commemorating the poet Qu Yuan’s life. In contemporary society, the Dragon Boat Festival has
become a tradition for family reunions and get-togethers with friends. The event promoted
cultural exchange and interest in Taiwan. Activities included making fragrant pouches, enjoying
traditional Taiwanese snack-tasting games, and learning about how Taiwanese enjoy racing
Dragon Boats on special occasions.
The 25 participants enjoyed tea and rice dumplings on a lovely New York afternoon. The
generous sponsorship of the Main Street Imperial Taiwanese Gourmet restaurant in Flushing,
NY, New York’s Teazzi teashop, and the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in New York
made possible this enchanting encounter between Taiwanese students and their friends and
guests in Central Park.
