Education Division of Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in New York (TECO) has launched its first ever game design exhibition “Level Up 2015 Taiwan Game Design Festival in New York” on May 30th and 31st. This is the first game design exhibition featuring works from Taiwanese students and themes from Taiwan. The works were selected by a group of experts from both academia and the game industry. The title of the exhibition, LEVEL UP, embodies the message that most gamers strive for -- to break boundaries and to win the game. The idea of succeeding is embodied throughout the exhibition in works ranging from digital games to non-digital games and even game art.

The event invited the special guest, the Deputy Minister Lin Si Ling from MOE attending to the opening. She was excited to join the opening show and appreciate the hard work from the students. She explained that “I believe that this game design exhibition not only highlights the technological and creative potential of game design in New York, but also explores the characteristics of the genre as a new art form, while providing every visitor with insight into both artistic and technical aspects of game creation.” The Education Division Director Charlin Chang also said that “The Education Division of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in New York (TECO) want to provide a platform that connects industrial resources with students so that excellent works can be exposed in the metropolitan area.”

Selected works from New York University, Parsons School of Design, and the School of Visual Arts, coming from as far as Indiana State, are dynamic and designed in various mediums. Rising Suns allows the player to use a camera to photograph and decide the narrative of the Sino-Japan War. Falling investigates a homicide from the perspective of the victim in a sophisticated atmosphere. Life Cycle examines the meaning of life with sleek and simple interaction with the game. Not only the digital games are rich in creativity, the Non-digital games are also welcomed by these young designers. Formation: Three Kingdoms is based on the history of ancient China, showing how cultural diversity is incorporated into the design of a game.

LEVEL UP opened at 2:30 p.m. on May 30th, and was accompanied with multiple cosplayers and a big game. The panel featuring gurus of game industry started at 4 p.m. and include CEO of Muse Games Howard Tsao, and Director of Partnership in SHINRA Technologies Colin Williamson. The exhibition continued through May 31st. Screening of video artworks would demonstrate how gaming elements perpetuate into the practice of art-making and life.
