November 13 Tuesday, Amazon announced that it has selected New York City and Arlington, Virginia, as the locations for our new headquarters. The two new second headquarters will be split between Long Island City in Queens and Arlington County, Virginia's Crystal City. Amazon also announced that it will invest $5 billion and create more than 50,000 jobs across the two new headquarters locations, with more than 25,000 employees each in New York City and Arlington. The new locations will join Seattle as the company’s three headquarters in North America.
In addition, Amazon announced that it has selected Nashville for a new Center of Excellence for its Operations business, which is responsible for the company’s customer fulfillment, transportation, supply chain, and other similar activities. The Operations Center of Excellence in Nashville will create more than 5,000 jobs.
There's been intense competition to win over Amazon, with more than 100 cities across the country competing and some throwing billions in tax incentives to the company. Amazon started to hunt for a second headquarters in September 2017, initially receiving 238 proposals before narrowing the list to 20 in January, 2018. The company stipulated that it was seeking to be near a metropolitan area with more than a million people; be able to attract top technical talent; be within 45 minutes of an international airport; have direct access to mass transit; and be able to expand the headquarters to as much as 8 million square feet in the next decade. Long Island City and Crystal City met Amazon's requirements for the new headquarters.
Amazon’s investments in each new headquarters will spur the creation of tens of thousands of additional jobs in the surrounding communities. Hiring at both the new headquarters will begin in 2019. The Operations Center of Excellence will be located in downtown Nashville as part of a new development site just north of the Gulch, and hiring will also begin in 2019.
The announcement capped a frenzied competition among nearly 240 communities across the country. Many politicians saw it as an opportunity to remake their city or a neighborhood for the tech era. Some economists and policymakers warned against using public money to help one of the most valuable companies in the world, and of the potential for escalating housing costs and traffic.
