國立清華大學校長賀陳弘率團訪問美東，於本(2014)年8月11日下午4時頒給耶魯大學校長彼得·沙洛維（Dr. Peter Salovey）人文學名譽博士學位，以表彰其對全球的影響力。出席觀禮賓客包括駐紐約臺北經濟文化辦事處范副處長國樞、教育組主任張佳琳、馬佐平院士、鄭永齊院士、李昌鈺博士、李弘祺教授、美東華人學術聯誼會董事長鍾炳采等各界學人，以及耶魯大學相關代表等。
本項頒授典禮是在耶魯大學舉行。賀陳校長在頒授典禮中致詞表示：「沙洛維是知名的社會科學家，他是世界有名學府耶魯大學的校長，該校所培養出來的學生，在各行各業舉足輕重」。賀陳弘說，沙洛維對人類社會有很大的貢獻，而透過具代表性名人的名譽博士學位頒授，「清華大學的核心價值將能有效的對世界傳達。」賀陳弘強調。
沙洛維校長是世界著名的社會心理學家。2013年7月1日，他正式接任耶魯大學第二十三任校長。耶魯大學創校於1701年，是全球著名的大學，不論在政治、醫學、工程、基礎科學、人文乃至法律研究等等與人類活動相關的領域上，耶魯的校友都是其中的佼佼者。清華大學推崇沙洛維是情緒智商（Emotional Intelligence ,EI）研究的先驅。
沙洛維校長在典禮演講中指出，「感謝清華大學的來訪以及頒授名譽博士學位。我與同僚梅耶（John Mayer）一起發展的「情緒智商」理論，拓展了人們對智力與能力範疇的認定，後續所開發的各種情緒測量工具，也陸續開展各界對於情緒智商的運用，並藉由研究探討情緒對人們思維與行動的影響力，我們也看到了這些研究進而對健康心理學與健康相關的公共政策具有重大影響」。
清華大學校長賀陳弘表示，這次清華決定將代表學校最高榮譽的名譽博士學位頒授沙洛維，即是對全世界宣布清華積極發展全球化願景的展現。這是清華大學首次赴海外舉行名譽博士學位頒授典禮。本項名譽博士學位的授與是今年經清華大學名譽博士學位審查委員會通過，另ㄧ位受頒對象為高通公司（Qualcomm Corporation）共同創辦人厄文•雅各布（Dr. Irwin Jacobs），清華大學將在8月19日在加州舉行另一場頒授典禮頒與工學名譽博士學位。

Yale president awarded National Tsing Hua University's highest honor
Dr. Hong Hocheng, president of National Tsing Hua University (NTHU), led a group of senior representatives to New Haven, Connecticut, on Monday, August 11, 2014. The reason for their trip around the world was to honor Dr. Peter Salovey by conferring upon him NTHU’s highest honor: an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree.
Peter Salovey was recognized for a lifetime of academic contributions and his respected leadership. He is known for his pioneering research in “emotional intelligence” and major contributions to the field of health psychology. Salovey has also led Yale University as its 23rd president since 2013 and previously as provost.
According to President Hocheng, NTHU honors those who are of global impact and prominence. By celebrating Dr. Salovey’s contributions and leadership, NTHU is embracing its core values and showing the world its global vision. This was NTHU’s first trip overseas to confer an honorary degree and a second ceremony will take place on August 18 in California, when Qualcomm co-founder Dr. Irwin Jacobs will be awarded an honorary Doctor of Engineering degree.
Many were on hand to witness Dr. Salovey’s award conferral, including famed forensic expert Henry Lee and numerous Yale colleagues. Chinese-American Academic & Professional Society (CAAPS) Chairman Dr. Ping-Tsai Chung, TECO-NY Deputy Director-General Alex Fan, and Education Director Charlin Chang also made the trip to offer their congratulations.
NTHU was initially one institution specializing in nuclear science, but over the past fifty-seven years it has transformed into a comprehensive research university. The university is now comprised of eight different colleges, and consistently ranks among Asia’s best schools.
