With the support from the Education Division of TECO-NY, Hunter College of City University of New York (Hunter College) and Wenzao Ursuline University of Languages (Wenzao University) entered into an agreement through the Taiwan Huayu BEST (Bilingual Exchanges of Selected Talent) Program, which encourages collaboration between universities in Taiwan and universities in the U.S. and promotes Mandarin language education in the U.S..
Hunter College and Wenzao University will work reciprocally to enhance the teaching and learning of Mandarin language and Taiwanese culture in the context of global education. A visiting scholar from Wenzao University will be hosted by Hunter College annually to teach in-person Mandarin courses. Additionally, the agreement between Hunter College and Wenzao University will provide support for a virtual conference on opportunities and challenges for studying abroad in the post-COVID pandemic era, TOCFL Chinese language proficiency tests, and an ACTFL OPI Workshop for teachers in the Huayu BEST Program. Hunter students will also have the opportunity to study Chinese in Taiwan with the scholarship offered by the Huayu BEST Program. The American college students from Hunter will join the “US-Taiwan Students Hand-in-Hand Alliance” program to assist Taiwanese secondary and primary school students to become bilingual in Mandarin and English.
“We are very excited to be able to advance our collaboration with Wenzao University through the Taiwan Huayu BEST Program,” said Der-lin Chao, Professor and director of the Chinese program at Hunter College. “The collaboration with Wenzao University provides unique opportunities to help cultivate Hunter students to become global citizens. We are especially delighted to see that three students will go to Taiwan in September to study abroad in Taiwan on a scholarship provided by the BEST Partnership Program.”
Dr. Chang-Mo Hsu, Dean of the College of Mandarin at Wenzao University said, “Taiwan Huayu BEST Scholarship Program allows Wenzao University and Hunter College to strengthen Mandarin Chinese for American students and English education for Taiwanese students. We welcome Hunter students to study Mandarin and experience Taiwanese culture.”
Both universities expect much success and in-depth and fruitful communications through the well-designed educational exchange activities in this project. This partnership provides the best value for global education. It empowers students with foreign language proficiency.
